YouTube was set by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, who were early workers of PayPal. Hurley had studied design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Chen and Karim studied computer science jointly in the University of Illinois in Urban - Campaign. According to a story that has been replicated in the media, Hurley and Chen developed the idea for YouTube through the first months of 2005, after they had experienced trouble sharing movies which was shot at a dinner celebration at Chen's apartment in San Francisco. Karim didn't attend the party and denied that it had happened, but Chen commented that the concept that YouTube was founded following a dinner party "was likely very strengthened by advertising ideas around developing a story that was quite digestible".

Karim said the inspiration for YouTube first came out of Janet Jackson's role in the 2004 Super Bowl episode, when her breast was exposed during her performance, and afterwards from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Karim could not readily find video clips of event online, which resulted in the notion of a video sharing site. Hurley and Chen reported the initial idea for YouTube was a movie version of an internet dating service, and was influenced by the site Hot or Not.
